5 Tips for Leather Handbag Care
Although leather bags are extremely durable, giving them special care will help extend their life and keep them looking like new. Some normal areas to experience wear and tear are straps, handles, the bag base, hardware (zippers, closures etc.) and pockets. Follow the steps below to keep your leather purse in excellent condition.
STEPS FOR CLEANING LEATHER HANDBAGS
1. CLEAN THE LEATHER HANDLES & EXTERIOR
The handles on your leather handbag are likely the most used area of your bag. When you touch the handle, the oil and dirt from your hands transfer onto the leather. This can cause the handles to appear darker and more worn than the rest of the bag. Lightly wipe the handles with an appropriate leather cleaner or baby wipe to clear the signs of daily use. Occasionally clean the exterior leather 1-2 times per year, before conditioning.
2. BRUSH OR BUFF OFF DIRT REGULARLY
Full grain leather is a sensitive material. Just like a garden can be over-watered, leather can be over-conditioned. Instead, use a stiff bristle brush or a soft cloth to brush off excess dirt from the leather surface. The Chic Sparrow Cloth Dust Cover is a great material for buffing and cleaning leather handbags.
3. CONDITION LEATHER HANDBAGS 1-2 TIMES PER YEAR
Depending on how often you use your leather bag, it may need conditioning 1-2 times per year. If you are working with a new conditioner or handbag, test the product in a small, unnoticeable area before applying to the entire bag. A slight darkening in the leather color is normal after conditioning. Check out the Chic Sparrow Leather Balm to condition full grain leather.
4. TAKE CARE OF THE INSIDE
We’ve all been there. With time and use, the inside of your leather purse can get a little grimy. Making sure that you clean the interior of your bag is just as important as the exterior. If the bag shape agrees, you can turn the bag inside out and use a toothbrush to clean out fuzz in the seams or in pockets. If that isn’t an option, try using a vacuum with a nozzle attachment to get dirt out of the bag interior.
5. STUFF LEATHER HANDBAGS TO HOLD SHAPE
When you’re not using your leather handbag, make sure that it retains it’s natural shape by stuffing the handbag. You can go the traditional route and use paper or bubble wrap, or try a creative approach and stuff your handbag with an old sheet, sweater or piece of fabric. If possible, you can also remove the handle and place it in the bag before storing. Always remember to clean, condition and dry your handbag before storing it long term.
